چکیده

The effect of carbon doping on the enhancement of visible luminescence from silicon-rich silicon oxide ~SRSO!, which consists of Si nanoclusters embedded inside a SiO2 matrix, is investigated. C-doped SRSO films were fabricated by electron cyclotron resonance-plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition method using SiH4 , O2 , and CH4 source gases followed by a high-temperature anneal. Intense blue-white visible luminescence, visible to the naked eye under daylight conditions, was observed from the film with a nearly equal amount of C and excess Si ~;16 at. %! after an anneal at 950 °C. Furthermore luminescence could be tuned from 1.8 to 2.5 eV by controlling the C to excess Si ratio, the C content, and the anneal temperature. Taken together with the infrared absorption spectra, these results indicate that the luminescence is attributed to exciton recombination in C-incorporated Si nanoclusters. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1645989#

Thermal annealing effects on photoluminescence properties of carbon-doped silicon- rich oxide thin films implanted with erbium

Results are presented from the photoluminescence properties of C-doped Si-rich thin film oxides implanted with Er, as investigated for various postdeposition implantation and subsequent annealing and passivation conditions. In particular, it was found that the near-infrared Er luminescence intensity can be increased by up to a factor of $4 after a postdeposition anneal at temperatures of 300–11...

The modulation on luminescence of Er3+-doped silicon-rich oxide films by the structure evolution of silicon nanoclusters

A series of silicon-rich oxide (SRO) and erbium-doped SRO (SROEr) films imbedded with structural tunable silicon nanoclusters (Si NCs) have been fabricated using sputtering followed by post-annealing. The coalescence of Si NCs is found in the films with large Si excess. The energy transfer rate between Si NCs and Er3+ is enhanced, but the luminescence efficiencies of both Si NCs and Er3+ are re...

Evolution of the sensitized Er3+ emission by silicon nanoclusters and luminescence centers in silicon-rich silica

The structural and optical properties of erbium-doped silicon-rich silica samples containing different Si concentrations are studied. Intense photoluminescence (PL) from luminescence centers (LCs) and silicon nanoclusters (Si NCs), which evolves with annealing temperatures, is obtained. By modulating the silicon concentrations in samples, the main sensitizers of Er(3+) ions can be tuned from Si...

Study of thermal treated a-Si implanted with Er and O ions

Visible luminescence of amorphous silicon layers either implanted with Er or co-implanted with Er and O and subsequently annealed in nitrogen has been investigated by cathodoluminescence (CL) in a scanning electron microscope. Co-implanted samples show a more intense luminescence, which is revealed by annealing at lower temperatures than the samples implanted only with erbium. Thermal treatment...
